Vishing Scams are on the Rise

VISHING is the term used to describe telephone-based phishing scams. It occurs when fraudsters (the “Bad Guys”) manipulate systems to “spoof” phone numbers – making calls appear to originate from a trusted caller – like your credit union (the “Good Guys”). Recent widespread scams have involved fraudsters duping individuals into providing CVV2/CVC2 codes (the three digit numbers printed on the back of your credit card or debit card) and expiration dates. This illegal act – if successful – allows the crooks to change the PIN on your card through voice response units and then use phone duplicate cards to make ATM withdrawals and purchases.

While we have not yet seen widespread instances of this scam here in Wisconsin, we feel it’s a good time to remind our members of some important points to remember:

Spot imposters

Scammers often pretend to be someone you trust or a company you do business with. Don’t send money or give out personal information in response to an unexpected request — whether it comes as a text, a phone call, or an email.

Don’t believe your caller ID

Technology makes it easy for scammers to fake caller ID information, so the name and number you see aren’t always real. If someone calls asking for money or personal information, hang up. If you think the caller might be telling the truth, call back to a number you know is genuine. If someone calls you claiming to be representing Ripco Credit Union and asks for any personal or confidential information – hang up and call Ripco at 715-365-4800 or toll-free at 877-365-4800.
